Shows like Game of Thrones and True Blood are extremely popular with television audiences and have become a common part of popular culture. Even books such as Fifty Shades of Grey have become a part of popular culture. Your text talks about changes in values and attitudes over time. Do you see these explicit depictions of sex and nudity becoming more common on television and in film? If this is, in fact, the case, debates about children and sexuality in the media will likely grow. Who do you feel is more responsible for the effects of sexual content on children: parents or production companies? Why?

NEXT Respond back directly to colleague in 25-50 words. Here is his response to the question below:
Name: Luis Lugo-Velez
Colleague response:

Explicit depiction of sex and nudity are becoming more common on television and media. More often than not, a sexual theme is usually portrayed explicitly or through sexual innuendos. Studies have been conducted which confirm that the more sexual content exposure among adolescents, the more likely adolescents are to experiment with sexual activity (p. 184). Exposure to sexual content has the possibility to change people’s attitudes, values, and behaviors (p. 185). Children exposed to sexual content also tend to experiment with sexual behavior at an earlier age. This is why it is important that parents monitor and filter the content their children watch.
The Federal Communications Commission allows for programing to voluntarily rate their content. This is a great tool to help parents in selecting the programs their children can watch. Production companies and television networks provide this tool in an effort to match audiences with its content. However, parents need to ensure that their children are watching programming that is age appropriate. Children have easy access to an array of programming, which may include sexual content, at their fingertips.
In order to keep media from changing their attitudes at an early age, parents need to put forth an effort to ensure they are reducing media with sexual content that may affect the child’s thoughts.
