Usually the hardest part of a research project is picking the right thing to research. If your topic is too simple, you will run out of things to say. If your topic is too complex, your research time will be spent jumping between trains of thought and your ability to narrow down a thesis is compromised. As an academic writer, it is your goal to spread new information on your topic wherever possible. You do not want to mislead your students by directing them towards erroneous information or irrelevant sources. Therefore, when picking sources for your research project, consider how useful each one might be toward revealing a new, interesting, or controversial aspect of your topic. Whether you are writing a research paper yourself, or you are providing a pool of resources for fellow academics or students, an annotated bibliography should offer a generous range of options for investigation. When researching, do not limit yourself to one range of questions about your topic. Think about the many possible questions your reader may have during their own research, and see if you can be helpful by giving them a head start on some of the obvious ones. Up until this assignment, citing sources has been required, but not a major part of the grade. This assignment’s goal is to start to familiarize you, the student, with some of the requirements of the academic profession. Citing sources correctly is a major part of that profession, and, especially in a research paper or annotated bibliography, if not done correctly can ruin the whole project. In part 1 of this research project, you must identify your topic and list at least 6 sources in the style format you will be using in part 2 of this project (MLA, APA and Chicago are your best options). Your sources may change between now and part 2, but don’t just pick throwaway sources that aren’t really helpful. Part 1 – Checkpoint Bring a statement about your topic (what it is, why you chose it, what you are interested in discovering about it) and a list of at least 6 sources to class on Tuesday, November 15th. Your sources should be listed in a Works Cited page. The list can be incomplete, and the sources can change between the checkpoint and the final draft, but you should be at least on the way to 10 sources, 4 of which must be academic and the other 6 trustworthy popular sources. You can have more of either type of source, but must have the minimum in each category.
Part 2 – Final Draft
An annotated bibliography plays many roles in academic research. A professor might provide an annotated bibliography to students in order to guide their reading throughout the semester. A researcher might put together an annotated list of sources to keep colleagues from having to do the same leg work again. A writer focusing on a complex topic could organize and evaluate each source as an effort to organize their thoughts before determining a thesis. Regardless of the end goal or the audience, remember that the point of an annotated bibliography is to provide an overview of the research on a particular topic, without actually synthesizing (making original statements) about the topic yourself. Now that you’ve chosen a topic and collected your sources, your goal is to organize them based on the kind of information or insight they provide about your source, to summarize the source, and to evaluate the source. There is no overall narrative or argument present in an annotated bibliography. You are simply listing each source reviewed in alphabetical citation order and presenting the relevant information that will guide you or your reader in further research. The balance between summary and evaluation can vary from source to source; for example, if you are presenting a respected source with highly technical information, the annotation may skew more towards summary and explanation, and include less about the source’s possible biases or flaws. However, if you are annotating a source with an obvious stake in the information it presents, you will need to spend more time acknowledging that bias and its effects on the material. Evaluating a source consists of explaining the strengths and weaknesses of a source, identifying any obvious bias and clarifying how this particular source contributes to your topic (i.e. why the source is relevant). Your evaluation should include all of these elements, but the focus can vary depending on the source. Ultimately your aim should be to equip the reader to choose the best sources from among the choices you offer. While the main part of an annotated bibliography is the actual evaluation of sources, there should be a brief introduction to explain what topic you are studying, what avenues you chose to research, and what you hope the reader pulls from the presented research. You should also take the time and space to explain why you chose this particular topic, and what your impression of the topic was at the beginning of your research. After your brief evaluation of all the sources, write a conclusion that communicates any points of research you want to highlight, and, most importantly, how your understanding of the topic changed as a result of your research.
