Each essay would need to be done on the Tuesday with a final completion date of all on August 1, 2017 – total of 5 essays (last one is just a combination of them all into one portfolio document)

Portfolio Task: The portfolio task for this class is an in-depth case study based on the legal and ethical principles discussed in the class as applied to an actual company. Each student will select a company that will serve as the basis for the case study. Given the multitude of issues that will be analyzed, each student should pick a large company. The student will analyze the company based on the legal principles discussed in each chapter. The following is a list of general topics which may be discussed.

NOTE: This is not an exhaustive list of topics for the student to address. It is merely an indicator of the form the analysis should follow. Each student is expected to develop concepts they feel are important to the issue being discussed and examine them in the context of their subject company. Note, also, that Chapter 1 is omitted as it is largely introductory.

Guidelines:
Each essay would be need an analysis of each issue/principle that should be at least 750 words (a total of at least 1,500 words for each one) then the last essay is a compilation of all previous essays in the series.

Essay 1:

Analyze the company based on the legal principles discussed in Chapters 3 and 4, considering the non-exhaustive list of general topics discussed in the Portfolio Task instructions and also in the Syllabus. You are expected to develop concepts you feel are important to the issue/principle being discussed and examine them in the context of your subject company. Remember that the analysis of each issue/principle should be at least 750 words (a total of at least 1,500 words for this assignment), and that the analysis should be completely factual – your opinion on the company’s practices will be addressed in the evaluation portion of the final paper.

Chapter 2 (The Duty of Loyalty: Whistleblowing): Has the company experienced any situations in which an employee has exposed illegal or unethical conduct in its operations? Does the company have a policy on whistleblowing by its employees?

Chapter 3 (Privacy and Technology): Does the company monitor employee’s e-mail and telephone calls? Can an employee be dismissed for statements in this manner? Has the company been sued on these grounds?

Chapter 4 (Valuing Diversity: Stereotyping vs. Inclusion): Does the company employ affirmative action as a hiring strategy? What policies does the company use to promote a diverse workforce? Has the company been sued for alleged discrimination?

Essay 2:

Analyze the company based on the legal principles discussed in Chapters 5 and 6, considering the non-exhaustive list of general topics discussed in the Portfolio Task instructions and also in the Syllabus. You are expected to develop concepts you feel are important to the issue/principle being discussed and examine them in the context of your subject company. Remember that the analysis of each issue/principle should be at least 750 words (a total of at least 1,500 words for this assignment), and that the analysis should be completely factual – your opinion on the company’s practices will be addressed in the evaluation portion of the final paper.

Chapter 5 (Workers’ Rights as Human Rights: Health and Safety in the Workplace): What steps has the company taken to ensure a safe workplace? Does the company experience a large amount of workplace injuries? Has the company been cited by OSHA for any noncompliance issues?

Chapter 6 (Global Climate Change: Responsibility and Survival): Do any of the company’s practices promote an environmentally friendly policy? Do the company’s operations present any environmental concerns? If so, how does the company address those concerns?

Essay 3:

Analyze the company based on the legal principles discussed in Chapters 7 and 8, considering the non-exhaustive list of general topics discussed in the Portfolio Task instructions and also in the Syllabus. You are expected to develop concepts you feel are important to the issue/principle being discussed and examine them in the context of your subject company. Remember that the analysis of each issue/principle should be at least 750 words (a total of at least 1,500 words for this assignment), and that the analysis should be completely factual – your opinion on the company’s practices will be addressed in the evaluation portion of the final paper.

Chapter 7 (Marketing and Technology: Choice and Manipulation): What is the company’s approach towards advertising? Who are its’ ideal customers and how does the company try to reach them? How does the company attempt to brand itself? Has the company been sued on any advertising-related claims?

Chapter 8 (Allocating Risk and Responsibilities: Products Liability): Do any of the company’s products present a potential risk to its users in their use or misuse? How does the company address those concerns? Has the company been sued on the alleged defectiveness of its products?

Essay 4:

Analyze the company based on the legal principles discussed in Chapter 9, considering the non-exhaustive list of general topics discussed in the Portfolio Task instructions and also in the Syllabus. You are expected to develop concepts you feel are important to the issue/principle being discussed and examine them in the context of your subject company. Remember that the analysis of each issue/principle should be at least 750 words, and that the analysis should be completely factual – your opinion on the company’s practices will be addressed in the evaluation portion of the final paper.

Chapter 9 (Ownership, Creativity, and Innovation: Intellectual Property): How important are trademark and copyright issues to the company? How does the company protect its trademarks and copyrights?

The analysis of the each issue should be at least 750 words. Thus, the analysis of the eight principles should comprise at least 6,000 words.

Essay 5:

The final paper should include all of the weekly factual analyses of the issues/principles outlined in the Portfolio Task instructions, as well as the final evaluation of the company (which evaluation shall be at least 1,000 words). In addition, the final section of the portfolio task will be an evaluation of the company from the student’s perspective. The student shall state whether he or she believes the company’s approach toward each of the examined issues is ethical or unethical and state the reasons for that belief. The student’s evaluation of the company shall be at least 1,000 words.
