Thanks.Christopher’s Post:The largest issue we have in my school is definitely attendance. The administration has been working on boosting attendance every year using different methods. The GreatSchools Staff (2016) explains that successful schools begin by engaging students and making sure they come to school regularly. As a school the challenge comes in convincing these students coming to school is important to their future. My high school has the second lowest attendance in the district and is one of the largest districts in the state. The school is in a very low socioeconomic area where school is not a top priority for the students or the parents. The students usually have to work to help support the family and school is at the bottom of the daily to-do list. The parents don’t hold their children responsible for attending school or are not home when the students are supposed to be at school. Students who are continuously late are identified by classroom teachers after three absences. These students are put on a list of students who are in danger of missing too many days of school and receiving an E for the quarter. We actually have two administrators in charge of students who are in jeopardy of failing because of absences. The students who are repeat offenders don’t understand the severity of their not attending school and it has been a hard road getting them to understand why they need to be in school. After three absences in one quarter (we run on an A/B day) the parents are contacted and informed that their student is in jeopardy of receiving an F for the quarter. The gaps come when the administration tries to contact the parents or guardians, but they don’t really care if their studentisn’t attending school. There are not really any procedures that can address this problem. Parents can be charged and taken to court, but that really doesn’t help or solve the problem. So, administrators are trying to find out directly from the students why they do not attend school and with that information they are trying to find ways to get them into school. The GreatSchools Staff (2016) explains that it is difficult for the teachers and the class to build their skills and progress if a large number of students are frequently absent. Our administration understands the impact of poor attendance for all learners and are working to remedy the attendance issues. The alternative methods are starting to work because the attendance last year rose, but we still have a long way to go in order to get these students in to school every day and on time. According to Merriam Webster Dictionary, it defines suspension this way ”The act of forcing someone to leave a job or a place for a usually short period of time as a form of punishment:the act of suspending someone.” Suspension is seen as a way of reformation, bringing or passing some ”moral lessons” to the erring one. In my district school i discovered that this method of punishment or discipline is no longer having effect that it supposed to have because the administration has not be firm in carrying to the letter this form of discipline. When suspension is given in my district school, we allow students go home thinking that it will have an effect on the student or students that are suspended but unfortunately it does not. They go home to watch TV, play games and may also get involved in drinking because parents will not be there to supervise them and by so doing become ”worse” rather than turning good as we expected. This situation set the school thinking of how best these students could be helped in becoming what they expected them to become, so the policy of sending them home was revised to serving the punishment in the school. They will be suspended from attending classes and will be given punishment in the school. That, really assisted us and educators also agreed with this form of suspension in asking them to go home (In-School Suspension: A Learning Tool, 2004). I believe that the school has done well in reversing the policy by making the suspension to be in school, because when it was experimented it was observed that it has an effect on the students because firstly, it denied them of classes and secondly, it brought a kind of ”shame” to the students because they do not like seeing their mates looking at them serving punishment. I shall also see to this in-school suspension by making the students to see it more as discipline rather than punishment, since it has more to do with both academic and moral life of students. Educators see it in this light, that in-school suspension is better than out-school suspension because out-school suspension could lead them to roaming the streets and getting involved in crimes which further complicate their issues (In-School Suspension: Learning Tools, 2004). Apart from the discipline aspect, counseling is another aspect that will be injected into the method reforming students when they err. When discipline is added in form of classes that will go a long way in ”cementing” their understanding on why they were disciplined.I believe in-school discipline will help re-shape students than out-school discipline, because of the lasting effect it will have on them and this will help them become what they are to be.ReferencesIn-School Suspension: A Learning Tool.
